I have been taking photographs for as long as I can remember.
I started off as a teenager with Praktica SLR, a bag full of lenses and took a mixture of slide and film.
I first went digital in 2000 with a Fuji FinePix2400 zoom which took pictures at 1600x1200 pixels
In 2005 I upgraded to an Olympus mju410D increasing image quality to 2272x1704 pixels.
In 2006 I moved on from digital pocket cameras and invested in a Nikon D80 DSLR – a 10 mega pixel semi-professional camera with a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED DX VR lense, supplemented with a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC ultra wide zoom for some landscape work. Most images are taken at 3872x2592 in HQ jpeg format and are between 4-5mb in size.
For specific commissions I can also capture RAW images for additional post-capture processing.
In 2009 after giving my daughter my old Olympus mju410D, I realised that occasionally a digital pocket camera is quite useful. So I picked up a Fuji A100, a 10 mega pixel camera with a 3x optical zoom taking images at 3648x2736 pixels in HQ jpeg format for £56 from ASDA. How can they make it at that price??? and it will be interesting to compare images with my Nikon D80. I'll set up a page soon showing the image quality of the different cameras I've owned over the last 10 years.
In 2010 I invested in a Sigma 150mm-500mm zoom in order to widen my portfolio and to capture that long range shot that normal cameras can't get. I have been impressed with the ease of use and sharpness when used hand held. I do try to keep the shutter speed above 1/300th second.
So with three lenses I go from 10mm to 500mm or in 35mm film terms 14mm to 700mm.
In 2010 I invested in a Nikon D3000 body which I picked up on the cheap as it was a boxed set with no lens. Two bodies do help to protect the camera and lens from dust and dirt as I am not having to constantly swop lenses when photographing an event.
In 2011 I decided a body upgrade was needed after struggling with my D80 to get decent low light piccys at the October 2011 Serpents Tail slalom so I brought the D7000. With a maximum image size of 4928x3264 at 16.1M pixels the image is almost a third larger than the D80. Maximum shutter speed is 1/8000th (D80 1/4000th), max rated ISO 6400 (1600) with further settings to 25,400 (6,400). I'll give some feedback in my blog.
I have two galleries.
The photo gallery are images posted at 640x428 for the earlier albums, but now increasingly at 800x800. These I take partly for fun, partly for improving my photographic technique and partly to sell through this website.
The image gallery is a selection of some of the more serious shots with location, comment and image data. These are posted at a maximum size of 800x800. Some images have been cropped from the original digital file to give better composition. This page is currently being populated as I look back through my hard drive. Each gallery opens in a new window.
